Working our Texas Longhorns
11/22/2023
This month we worked our Texas Longhorns for the first time. I should add it was the first time that we've worked any cattle, so it was quite the learning experience. Everything went as well as you could hope for; nobody got hurt and the cattle weren't stressed out much. We worked the cattle a couple of times by ourselves, and then once with the veterinarian. All cattle received the vaccinations that they were due for, and we had fun measuring horns (TTT).
Working Texas Longhorn cattle can be a challenge, but the cattle pens that we used certainly made our lives easier. We purchased custom cattle pens from P&C Cattle Pens, which were specifically designed for working with Texas Longhorns. After using their Longhorn cage, I can't imagine doing it any other way. This system makes it easy to safely and efficiently work our Longhorns, which translates to less stress. Fortunately I can say that our veterinarian thought the process went very well, which says a lot because they have extensive experience working all sorts of cattle.
Aside from things going well in regard to safety and it being productive, the experience was quite rewarding personally. It's just a unique thing to do with your family, to learn how to work your own Texas Longhorns. Imagine what is going on here. You have these large animals with long horns running through gates, and you're trying to safely secure them so that they can be vaccinated. When I say safely, I don't just mean your own safety, I mean for the cattle as well. The last thing we would want is for a cow to get nervous and hurt themselves. After working cattle for any length of time you can easily see how that could happen. So it all comes at you fast, and you have to learn from the experience together. It all feels like one big adrenaline producing, team building exercise.
